April 30 is National Therapy Animal Day, a nationwide celebration honoring service pets for their daily contributions to humans.

COMMUNITY TO GET INVOLVED. IT’S NATIONAL THERAPY DAY SERVICE. PETS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ARE BEING HONORED FOR HELPING THEIR HUMAN FRIENDS. KMBC NINE’S ALAN SHOPE WAS AT ONE CELEBRATION AT NORTH KANSAS CITY HIGH SCHOOL. IT’S A CELEBRATION OF SORTS FOR THREE YEAR OLD BLACK LAB ANIMAL THERAPY DOG K9. CONGRATULATIONS. IT’S NOT A BIRTHDAY OR ANNIVERSARY, BUT IT’S A THANK YOU FOR WHAT HE DOES ON A DAILY BASIS AT NORTH KANSAS CITY HIGH SCHOOL, WORKING WITH STUDENTS THAT ARE DEALING WITH A BAD DAY. ONCE WHEN THEY GET IN THERE AND THEY SIT DOWN ON THE FLOOR AND I GIVE HIM HIS COMMANDS, THAT IS TO GET INTO THEIR LAP AND JUST LAY HIS HEAD DOWN. AND THAT JUST GIVES THEM A SENSE OF RELIEF. IT’S NATIONAL THERAPY. ANIMAL DAY. RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF DOGS LIKE K9, EITHER AT WORK OR IN SCHOOLS, IF THEY START PETTING HIM, HE THEN COMES IN CLOSER AND THEY’LL WILL LAY DOWN THERAPY ANIMALS ARE GETTING MORE AND MORE POPULAR AT SCHOOL DISTRICTS ALL OVER THE KANSAS CITY AREA. NORTHTOWN SAYS. IT JUST BRINGS A WHOLE DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERE TO THE SCHOOL. NORTHTOWN STUDENTS AGREE HE’S JUST ALWAYS THERE WHEN HE WHEN YOU NEED HIM, HE’S THERE TO HELP ME RELIEVE MY STRESS, ESPECIALLY WITH BEING AN IB STUDENT. HE’S DEFINITELY THERE TO HELP CALM ME DOWN. NORTH KANSAS CITY SAYS THEY’RE ALL ABOUT THERAPY ANIMALS. IN FACT, THEY’VE GOT EIGHT OF THEM IN THE DISTRICT. I FEEL LIKE THEY’RE DEFINITELY CATCHING ON. I’VE HEARD OTHER WORKPLACES ALSO HAVING THEM, SO WHO DOESN’T LOVE A DOG? I MEAN, AT THE WORKPLACE, RIGHT? AND THAT’S WHAT THIS CELEBRATION WAS ALL ABOUT IN NORTH KANSAS CITY. A service dog at one North Kansas City high school was the subject of celebration Tuesday.April 30 is National Therapy Animal Day, a nationwide celebration honoring service pets for their daily contributions to humans. Kenai, a three-year-old black lab and therapy dog, helps students at Northtown High School cope with challenging days."And once they get in there and they sit down on the floor and I give him his commands, and that is to get into their lap and just lay his head down and just give them a sense of relief," Jessica Byers, Kenai's handler, said .National Therapy Animal Day recognizes the importance of dogs like Kenai. These animals provide comfort and support in workplaces and schools. Therapy animals are becoming increasingly popular in school districts across the Kansas City area."It just brings a whole different atmosphere to the school," Byers noted.Northland students agree with this sentiment."He's just always there when you need him," Reed Pearman, a senior at Northtown, said. North Kansas City is particularly supportive of therapy animals, boasting eight of them in the district."I feel like they're definitely catching on. I feel like other workplaces are having them, so who doesn't love a dog? I mean, at the workplace, right?" Byers said.The celebration of National Therapy Animal Day is a testament to the growing recognition of the significant role these animals play in our lives.
