KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - STAR bonds have been successfully used in the past, case and point – The Legends Outlets and Kansas Speedway in Wyandotte’s Village West would still be an empty space without the tax break.

Former KCK Mayor and Wyandotte CEO Carol Marinovich negotiated those big deals with the help of others at the time the county consolidated its government. She believes the STAR bonds could be a great tool to attract a professional team to Wyandotte, as well.

“I think that’s exactly what the STAR bonds were created for – tourism destination things, so this would fit in perfectly,” Marinovich said. “The timing is good, I mean we have a really strong Governor, who I think if there’s a governor who could pull it off, I think Governor Kelly could.”

Besides the shopping center and NASCAR events, Village West also houses the Kansas City Monarchs, Sporting Kansas City and the new American Royal.

Wyandotte County Administrator David Johnston issued a statement regarding the STAR bonds vote happening at the state level in Kansas.

“As others, I am sure, are intrigued by the news that the State Legislature is crafting a proposal to lure the Chiefs and the Royals to the Sunflower State, we here in Wyandotte County are watching, as well,” Johnston said. “We would welcome a conversation about the future of both teams as they consider their future facilities. Our county has proven to be a hospitable destination for professional and amateur sports of all kinds—from NASCAR to MLS to Homefields to the Monarchs and to the new American Royal. Wyandotte County would appreciate the opportunity to work with the teams to balance the impact of such projects with our desired goals for equitable economic development. I may be selfish here, but, if either team were to move to Kansas, they should absolutely consider to Wyandotte County first.”
